Crispy Roasted Sweet Potatoes

Sharing is caring!

Po-TAY-TOE, Pa-Ta-TOE, I don’t care how you say it, but 99% of the store bought bags of sweet potatoe fries come loaded with mustard. andddddd If you’ve been following me for awhile, you know that I’m super allergic to mustard, so that is a no go. Mustard is in wayyyyyyy more products than most people realize.

As much as I would love to grab a store-bought bag of sweet potato fries, mustard is actually one of their key ingredients. I’ve tried to make homemade sweet potato fries before, but I just can never seem to get them quite right. Luckily, my experimenting lead me to crispy roasted sweet potatoes chunks, and guys, I EXCEL at making them.

Versatile Side, Snack Or Base

Why are these crispy roasted sweet potatoes so great?  Not only do most adults and kids LOVE sweet potatoes, but the size of the chunks means they’re really easy for little toddler hands to pick up.

They work well alongside your favorite meal or even as a snack ( I like them cold, is that weird!?).

They also make great leftovers, so if you make a big batch you can use them to supplement meals throughout the week.

Are Sweet Potatoes Healthy?

Heck yeah, sweet potatoes are a total superfood. Not only are they packed with soluble and insoluble fiber (which are super important to your digestion process), they’re filled with all sorts of great vitamins and nutrients (such as Vitamin A, B, and C) that help support a healthy body and a functioning immune system. They even contain 6 grams of protein in each potato (protein is great for helping make you feel fuller after eating a meal).

Perhaps even more interesting than their nutritional content is the fact that sweet potatoes may even help you live longer. Cardiologist Dr. John Day, (author of The Longevity Diet), spent a year in a region of China known for having its people live well over 100 years.

He found that the residents consumed sweet potatoes with all their meals, and that not only were they living longer, but that they were doing so without suffering from diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s or cancer.

So if you’re looking for a healthy sweet potato recipe to serve your family, these oven roasted potatoes are a great option, since they’re totally jam packed with nutritional goodness.

How Are The Sweet Potatoes Cooked?

To cook these delicious crispy roasted sweet potatoes, you’ll begin by washing and drying them and then peeling them. Having a GOOD potatoe peeler can make all the difference. I have really loved this one, and it’s pretty inexpensive.

After your sweet potatoes are washed and peeled, you will then cube them. For the best crispiest sweet potatoes, I recommend about an inch and a half to two inches across. Just make sure they’re all about the same size so they cook in the same amount of time.

The most important step for making them crispy, is to coat them in oil right in the bowl. This helps from the oil burning up on the pan and well, from burning your potatoes.

I prefer to use avocado oil; it has a great taste and it’s packed full of nutrients (like Vitamin E and omega 3 fatty acids). It also has a long shelf life, so it can hang out in your cupboard for a while. If you don’t have avocado oil on hand, you can absolutely use whatever oil that you have on hand.

Seasoning The Sweet Potatoes

Once you thoroughly coat the chunks in oil, it’s time to season with a combination of paprika, Himalayan sea salt, and pepper. You can use regular table salt or Kosher salt if you’d like, but Himalayan sea salt comes with some added benefits over the other options out there. It’s free of additives, and it has minerals and trace elements that table and kosher salt lack (due to the unique harvesting process used for Himalayan sea salt). If you live near a Trade Joes, grab their grinder it’s inexpensive.

The paprika on the potatoes rounds out this recipe. I have used both regular paprika and smoked paprika and either will work great. If you have access to this delicious seasoning, I highly recommend it!

Finally, place your potatoes in an oven preheated to 400 degrees, and cook for 45 minutes. The key is to flip the sweet potatoes every 15 minutes in order to ensure they get nice and crispy on the outside. It’s as easy as that.

How To Make Sweet Potatoes In Air Fryer

Can you make these sweet potatoes in the air fryer? Answer, is absolutely! Follow the same seasoning method, but instead place in your air fryer for 14 minutes flipping half way in between. I will be honest and. tell you that I do prefer to make them in the oven, as it gives the sweet potatoes the crispiness not only on the outside but he inside as well.

Key to Making Great Crispy Sweet Potatoes?

There are a few things you’ll want to do to make these crispy roasted sweet potato chunks really amazing. First, you’ll want to make sure you’re placing them in a separate bowl with oil, tossing thoroughly to completely coat each chunk, then placing them on a cooking tray.

Even though it’s a bit more effort, cook them at 400 degrees and flip them every 15 minutes for the full 45-minute cooking time to get a nice crispy coat all over. Finally, don’t be afraid to season!
