What Are Overnight Oats?

Overnight oats are a creamy mixture of old fashioned oats, non-dairy coconut yogurt and unsweetened vanilla almond milk combined together in the fridge overnight.

The jars travels easy, making it a great option for a breakfast on the run or even a good addition to the lunch box. Simply grab a spoon and your breakfast is ready to go.

My husband requests these often as he can quickly grab it from the fridge and easy throw the jar into his briefcase. This is also an extremely easy breakfast idea for toddlers.

Easy Dairy Free Breakfast

This recipe can be easily manipulated to use whatever kind of “milk” and yogurt that you have on hand. I created this recipe when my daughter was still allergic to dairy. While you can use “regular” milk I believe that the recipe works best with a non-dairy milk. Unsweetened vanilla almond milk works best for this recipe, it has less sugar and packs a lot of flavor.

You can also use unsweetened or sweetened almond milk, coconut milk, hemp, oat or cashew milk.

Overnight Oats Ratio

The biggest complaint I hear from people discussing overnight oats is that they are too soggy, or the overnight oats are just too mushy. This is because you probably aren’t using the right ratio when it comes to yogurt and milk combo.

Opting not to use yogurt in your oats will result in watery overnight oats. The yogurt gives the oats the consistency it needs to stay nice and creamy for several days in the fridge. This recipe calls for the perfect consistency in order for your oats to absorb the milk, while still keeping it nice and creamy.

Storing Overnight Oats

The oats will stay good covered in the fridge for up to 3-5 days. If you find the oats have dried out a bit add just a dash or two of milk and mix well to revive your oats.

The recipe as stated is the amount needed for one container. I have found that small pyrex containers work great, and my favorite are the small ball jars
